Summer brings together the great outdoors, grilling, and fantastic family time on your gorgeous deck. But wait, your deck is far from gorgeous and perhaps, non-existent.

Big Red Construction can help build your dream deck, but there is one big question to ask, do you want to build it from wood or a composite material?

Wood Deck

Traditionally decks are made of wood which can last 10-20 years if maintained. Wood is a natural element that feels warm in the outdoors and is a cost friendly option. The downside to wood is that it is prone to splits, warping, and requires regular maintenance including washing and re-staining/sealing.

There are a variety of wood options to choose from, some standing up better to mother nature than others. For example, cedar and redwood are lovely and prove more resistant to weather but come with a higher price tag. Their less expensive cousin, pressure treated pine, is likely to split and crack under the stress of weather.

Composite decking is a combination of wood fibers and recycled plastic leading to a dense, weather and stain-resistant material that won't splinter, warp, or rot. It's a low maintenance material that requires some simple cleaning with soap and water or the hose.

Because it's a man-made material, composite decking is available in a wide range of styles and colors to ensure it fits your home's style. Of course with a material made to last a lifetime, composite decking comes with a higher price of nearly triple natural wood.

With the right care and consideration, a deck of any material can add a great outdoor space to your home.
